September 30 (Wednesday) – Yangshou/Guilin

View from Yao Mtn, Guilin, China, 2009 (7324)This morning we drove back to Guilin and took a chair lift to the top of Yao Mountain for views. It was really spectacular. You could see many of the Karst hills that dotted the landscape and the mountain ranges in the far distance.

We had lunch near the Seven Stars Park. I think this meal had the best visual presentation of any meal so far (and that’s hard to do). The soup was a combination of two fairly thick soups, a white tofu soup and a green vegetable soup. They were both served in the same bowl to look like the Yin and Yang symbol. The serving of water chestnuts was surrounded by a ring of paper thin cucumber. Other dishes were artfully arranged and all of the food was as good tasting as it was good looking.

We then went to Solitary Beauty Peak, a stand alone peak in what was a private garden. The area is now a teacher’s college. We hiked most of the way up to take in some views.

Then it was to the airport for yet another flight. Paul is doing better with his cold but I now have it in spades. We both just had soup for supper. It was supposedly minestrone with beans. It was really just a vegetable soup, no beans found…but it was good for our colds.
