September 21 (Monday) – Yangtze River/Yichang

We were on the tour buses by 8:00am for the trip to see the Yangtze River dam project. The prospective from the view points allowed a good view of the locks and also the dam – both up river and down.

After lunch in Yichang, we had some time before we needed to be at the airport, so we opted for a stroll along the river front park (instead of the offered tour of another temple or museum). The park runs for about seven kilometers (4.2 miles) along the river and we had a lovely stroll. There was an interesting bonsai garden, a garden with a lily pond and fishermen along the river (some with umbrella hats). The most heart stopping event of the trip so far (hopefully ever) was the five vehicle crash we were in on the way to the airport. The truck two behind us failed to brake when the two trucks and two cars in front of We were rear-ended, Yichang, China, 2009 (1741)it had to brake suddenly. No one was hurt…we will see how the necks feel tomorrow. We were in the middle vehicle with the front end of a large truck buried in the back window of our van…glass was all over our luggage.

Another tour van (carrying two ladies from the Middle East) came by within minutes of the crash and our guide flagged them down, we loaded our luggage in and were on our way to the airport within about five minutes of the crash.

After arriving in Shanghai we had an hour drive to Suzhou. The drive into the city was beautiful with many tall buildings with lots of lights.
